In Windows XP, we could easily change the background color of Windows Explorer by creating and editing the desktop.ini file. We could even set a picture as a folder background using the same technique.
Windows 7 file explorer change background color
There have been tools to change the color of Windows Explorer background in Windows 7 and set an image as a folder background in Windows 7, but these tools are not compatible with the new File Explorer introduced with Windows 8.
For some reason, these folder background changing tools do not work in Windows 10 and Windows 8/8.1. Ever since the release of Windows 10, users have been asking us to come up with a way to set a picture as a folder background or at least change the folder background color, and we decided to come up with this guide.
If you cannot stare at the white background of Windows 10 File Explorer or folders, you can use the QTTabBar to change the default background color. Using QTTabBar to change File Explorer background color is not very straight forward, though. So, please follow our directions carefully.
Step 6: Switch to Folder View tab. Check Base background color. Select a background color for the active and inactive window. Click the Apply button.
Step 7: Move to the Navigation pane tab. Check Back color. Choose a background color for the left navigation pane, choose a text color (if you want) and then click Apply button again.
In Colors, you can let Windows pull an accent color from your background, or choose your own color adventure. After you've selected an accent color, scroll down to indicate where you want to see the color show up. Or scroll up to Choose your mode and you can see whether your accent color looks better in a Dark or Light mode.

The Windows operating system includes numerous features you can use to personalize the appearance of your computer. Nonetheless, even though Aero -- the default theme in Windows 7 -- enables users to change the color of the window borders, taskbar and Start menu, you can't alter any other parts of the theme. To change the background color in Windows Explorer and other applications, such as Notepad and WordPad, you must switch to Windows Classic.
I'm using WindowBlinds 10.5.0 in Windows 10. None of the themes I've tried have been able to change the main background color of File Explorer windows. I've tried using themes which, when I used Windows 7, did change the Explorer main background color; in Windows 10, the same themes have no such effect.
Note that, in the WindowBlinds advanced settings, the "I want styles to be able to apply textures to the back of explorer windows" option is grayed out and can't be enabled, for some reason. Maybe that's part of the problem?

Scroll down about 10 lines or so to "System Color :ExplorerBackground", click on it, then click on "Change colour..." button.2nd option- This will change the overall window background color, including probably some applications and various backgrounds within Windows. Scroll down to almost the bottom of the list to "System Colour :Window", click on it, then click on the "Change colour..." button. It is best to stay away from extremely dark colors for this color because the color tends to be misused sometimes by applications and may result in dark text on a dark background in various places.If set, 1st option "System Color :ExplorerBackground" will be used for the Explorer windows instead of what is in "System Color :Window".

My old system had Office 2007. My new one came with Office 2019 installed. In Outlook 2007, the alternating months in month view could display different background colors. It helped to distinguish the current calendar at a glance. I cannot find where to do this in 2019. Is it possible?
Please, Microsoft, allow the end user the option of determining background colors for their Microsoft applications. As a case in point, allow us the option in Outlook, Office 365 to change the awful white background which is hard on the eyes; the other options such as colorful, black and grey are terrible for me. It should be relatively easy for you to develop this end-user option., rather than being highly restrictive. This should apply to all Microsoft applications so that the end user can decide on their own color schemes for the backgrounds, text, and screen elements which are pleasing and easy on the eyes. I work 10-12 hours a day on my computer. I need to develop a color scheme which will save my eyesight. There must be many out there who would agree with me. Your favorable response to my plea would be highly appreciated.
I really HATE the change in 2019 color choices. Where is the choice? I do not have time for this. WHO is making these choices. THIS IS AWFULE! Please when you change things give everyone a choice to keep or change not just change. Thank you!
It appears that the step backward is an attempt to have one operating system and set of applications that run on both tablets and computers. My guess is that since many tablets are limited in the amount of memory they have, Microsoft has opted to ditch 3D modeling of buttons and ribbons and real color options. It is a pain, and is a lot of work for the brain to separate out what it is seeing. I have to pay close attention to everything I do, which is exhausting after a day of working in MS tools. With the old 3D rendering and color schemes, my eyes relaxed, and I could better intuitively go to whatever I was looking for. We can only hope that these kinds of changes might set MS up for some much needed competition.
I am VERY disappointed with Office 2016 because we cannot change the BRIGHT WHITE PAGE background color. I am not referring to theme color; rather, the work area that we do our reading. The eye strain makes it painfully difficult to work in Excel, Word and Outlook all day. Office 2010 and prior versions allowed us to change the default page background to a soft yellow and it was easy on the eyes. Microsoft, are you listening? Please make this change ASAP. Thanks.
Just got upgraded to Office 2013 today. I do like the lighter colors, BUT, NOT to work in. If I was glancing at a brief website article with these colors, it would be ok. But that is not the case. I am using Outlook all day for work, and I am looking at the screen for long periods of time. And yes, it does hurt my eyes after a period of required squinting. I wish there was an easy way to change the entire color scheme for those of use with more sensitive eyes.
Thanks for posting, however I would like to change the background colour of the actual window where your list of emails are listed (e.g. where you double click on one to open) not the menus area. I would also like to change the viewing/editing pane window when you are reading or composing and email.
Keep in mind that this will only affect Outlook window bars, ribbon and Navigation pane (the one on the left with all your folders) and not the background color in the Reading pane and message editor. In Visual Studio 2008, is there any way to change the background color of the highlighted item in the Solution Explorer? The current setting makes the item quite visible when the Solution Explorer has focus (blue), but when the editor has focus, the background color is a very light gray, which makes it near impossible to see. I hate having to navigate to a type's definition, and then have to give the Solution Explorer focus to see where in the solution the current file lies.
